History: The department of Dendrology was established in 1949. The first name of the department was “Dendrology with wood anatomy”.

In 1974 two departments were joined: “Dendrology with wood anatomy” and “Forest plantations” and the newly established department was named “Forest plantations”. In 1976 the former department “Dendrology with wood anatomy” split from “Forest plantations” and took a name “Forest botany and breeding”.

Since 1984 the department accepted again the initial name, slightly shortened and since then it is “Department of Dendrology”. First head of the department was Acad. Prof. Boris Stefanov.

1949-1959: Academician Prof. Boris Stefanov

1959-1964: according to documents from the personal file of Prof. At. Ganchev (archive from personal staff) and according to Prof. Ivan Vasilev Mihov's oral information, probably after the departure of Prof. B. Stefanov, Associate Professor Atanas Gegov and Associate Professor Atanas Ganchev were temporarily acting as head of the department;

1970-1974: associate professor Venko Kalinkov

1974-1976: Prof. Boyan Zahariev (the two departments: "Dendrology with Tree Anatomy" and "Forest Cultures" were merged, and the newly formed department took the name "Forest Cultures").

07/01/1976 – 05/10/1984: Prof. Ivan Dobrinov (then Department of Forest Botany and Breeding)

1984-1989: Prof. Venko Kalinkov
