The Wood Science Laboratory consists of two halls, which carry out a variety of wood training and research activities. The main hall (305) houses the xylotech. It contains specimens for studying the morphological structure of wood. They are two species, representing more than 50 of ours and about 30 tropical tree species. The hall has a rich collection of wood samples soaked in glycerin and prepared for microscopic examination. For these tests, the room is equipped with transmitted light microscopes. There are also various test pieces in the hall to study the physical and mechanical properties of wood.

The Hall of wood defects (306) is equipped with a rich collection for the study and study of the defects of wood. Samples collected over time by students and colleagues are presented here. They allow for a wide variety of deficiencies in both round and shaped materials.

Work activity:

The laboratory trains students in the subjects of “Technology of Wood and Furniture“ and “Engineering Design (Interior and design of furniture)“, research and consultations. Students calculate different machine elements such as gears, chain gears, worm gears, shafts, axis, bearings. Each student receives a previously drawn plan with the magnitudes of the forces, power, torque and other data needed to calculate the corresponding assignment. To calculate the assignment students use different guides, catalogs and standards. After completing the calculations, students design and draw the corresponding machine elements.

Equipment:

The laboratory is in disposition of various machine elements: cylindrical gears, cone gears, worm gears, chain wheels, chains, belt pulleys, belts, reduction gear, shafts, bearings, connectors, variators, screw connections, bolts, nuts, washers.

Chief Assistant Valentin Atanasov, PhD

Services provided by the laboratory:

Students from Faculty of Forest Industry and Faculty of Business Management are trained in the laboratory. The application, construction and mechanisms of a wide group of woodworking machines are examined: band saw machines, circular saw machines, shapers, jointers, drilling machines, thicknessers, etc. The machines are calculated kinematically, force and strength. Cutting, feeding, transmitting and other mechanisms of woodworking machines are calculated kinematically. The cutting forces generated during the work, the inertial forces, the friction forces, traction forces, the required compressive forces, and more are determined. Strength and stiffness design is performed, and engines for cutting, feeding, adjusting and other mechanisms are selected. On their basis, the design of their main elements – working spindles, elements for feed movement, etc. is carried out. Laboratory classes with woodworking machines are performed.

Devices available to the laboratory when performing the services:

The laboratory has a band saw machines, a shaper with lower spindle position, a multi-purpose drilling machine and two circular saw machines; measurements of power-energetic indicators of woodworking machines are carried out – by multifunctional device which allows reporting of current, voltage, power factor, active, reactive, full power – for each phase and total; current and voltage transformers which are needed to connect the device and software from the manufacturer.
