General Information
The Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Forestry is an educational and scientific center, which conducts scientific and applied projects on current problems of modern agriculture. One of the priorities of the faculty is the training of highly qualified experts for the needs of science and practice through doctoral programmes in scientific fields within the scientific competence of the academic staff of faculty.
The are 11 accredited doctoral programmes in Faculty of Agriculture from three Professional fields 6.1. Plant growing, 6.2. Plant protection and 6.3. Livestock Breeding as follows:

Тhe admission and training of the doctoral students is carried out in accordance with the Higher Education Act, Development of Academic Staff in the Republic of Bulgaria Act, The rules for Development of Academic Staff in University of forestry and all related rules and legislation for admission and training of doctoral students, as well as the Rules of University of forestry. General entry requirements: a Master’s Degree. Doctoral training is provided in a full-time, part-time and independent form of study. Students defended their PhD theses are awarded with degree “Doctor of philosophy”.
Teaching staff
The training of doctoral students is carried out by habilitated teaching staff with active scientific and publication activity, whose scientific results are reflected in the scientific literature with numerous citations. Teachers are involved in the implementation of numerous research projects funded by international and Bulgarian funding institutions. They actively participate in international and national expert groups as well as editorial boards of international scientific journals.
Research facilities
Ph.D. students in FA are provided with personal working space. Their training is provided with the necessary research infrastructure in accordance with the specifics of the scientific specialty. The FA laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to enable advanced research experiments. The training field of UF “Vrazhdebna”, as well as the bases of partner institutions and companies, are used for conducting field experiments. The Ph.D. students also have access to all the research resources of other faculties of the University of forestry. The doctoral students have access to specialized laboratory equipment of a wide range of scientific institutes within the Agricultural academy and Bulgarian academy of sciences, located on the territory of Sofia, with which the professors of the Faculty of agriculture maintain active scientific cooperation.
Information resources
Doctoral students have free access to the internet in all laboratories and buildings of the University. The library and information complex of UF has a rich fund providing scientific information to the various scientific specialties of AF. Ph.D. students have easy access to the resources of the Central Agricultural Library and all other scientific institutions located in Sofia.
Qualification and training opportunities
The training of the Ph.D. students in FA is realized through modern educational forms and methods, as well as through their involvement in various educational projects, which contribute to the improvement of their qualifications and the quality of their scientific developments.
Support for research, mobility, and publishing. Most of the Ph.D. students participate in research projects developed by their scientific advisors, thanks to which they are provided with all the materials and supplies they need for the research tasks. By participating in projects funded by European funds, Ph.D. students have the opportunity to be supported for: mobility for scientific specializations and participation in scientific forums; research materials and supplies; access to scientific information and specialized scientific equipment, etc. The expenses for the scientific publications of the Ph.D. students are covered in a different form by the University. Participation in national and international scientific forums provides doctoral students with the opportunity to make contacts with distinguished scientists and to get acquainted with the latest achievements in their specialty at home or abroad.
Career prospects
The doctoral students awarded with degree “Doctor of philosophy” may work as: university lecturers; researchers at scientific institutes of the Agricultural Academy, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and private scientific institutes and RTD centers in the field of agriculture; executives in the specialized units of the state structures in the field of agriculture; managers in the field of agribusiness, etc.
