History: The Department of “Technologies and Mechanization in Forestry” is the successor of the third department in the field of forestry – “Forest Exploitation with Forest Technology”. The Department of “Forest Exploitation with Forest Technology” was established in 1930 to the newly created “Agronomy and Forestry Department” of the University of Sofia. Its first head was Associate Professor Todor Dimitrov, who later became full Professor and Corresponding member of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Throughout the years the department has been named as follow: from 1945 to 1974 – “Forest Exploitation with Forest Transport”; from 1974 to 1994 – “Mechanization of Forestry” and from 1994 it was renamed “Technologies and Mechanization in Forestry”.

Scientific directions of the professors of the department:
The scientific directions and areas in which work has been carried out in the TMF department since its creation until today are directly related to the scientific, scientific-applied and practical needs of forestry in our country. Established way back in 1930, as the main unit for scientific assurance and training of specialists with higher education in the field of forestry in Bulgaria, the TMF department continues to work in this important area of forestry in our country. Since then, the department has not interrupted its main activity, and all the time it has continuously enriched and developed its scientific and research activities and professional interests.
The scientific directions in which the TMF department works today are multifaceted and specific in nature, but all of them have a direct relationship to the ecological use and restoration of forest and natural resources and are aimed at the sustainable development of forestry in the Republic of Bulgaria. The scientific and professional areas in which the teachers of the TMF department work are directly related to their professional, research and teaching interests.
