Students learn about the infectious process (macro-micro organism relationships), and about the epidemic process (the conditions of occurrence of epidemics and the determinants – the drivers of the epidemic). During the course the lecturers present the global and the Bulgarian experience in the detection, containment and eradication of epidemics and the preventive and control measures for animal husbandry. Essential part in the discipline occupies the procedures for collecting, processing and analysis of epidemiological data as well as the economic aspects of the analysis. The main economic aspects related to animal diseases prevention, control and eradication are presented as well as the basic principles of economic analysis and evaluation of the effectiveness of the anti-epidemic measures, the economic losses associated with the localization and elimination of an epizootic disease and how to calculate the benefits from its eradication from the territory of the country.

In the third part of the course, the students are acquainted with the doctrine of pest control (disinfection, insect – control and rodents – control) and their role and place in the complex of the anti-epidemic measures. Special attention is paid to the requirements for carrying out pest control in farms and animal holdings as well as in enterprises producing or processing raw materials and products of animal origin and also in factories for the production of feed and feed ingredients. The role of pest control monitoring methods and analysis of their effectiveness is highlighted.

The topics included in the lectures are directly related to the subject of microbiology and virology, immunology, infectious diseases, tropical diseases, propaedeutic, parasitology, non-infectious diseases, nutrition, zoo-hygiene, ecology, economics, toxicology, pharmacotherapy, chemistry and biostatistics.

During the practical classes, the students have opportunity to actively participate in the implementation of different studies, which are required later for the exam.

       SYLLABUS

Lecturers:

Assoc. Their ecological and economical significance is enormously high and multilateral. They are a causative agents of infectious diseases in the multicellular organisms. Moreover they participate in the circulation of substances in the nature, as well as in production of antibiotics, enzymes, vitamins, biological manures, feeds, nutritive products and drinks.

The infectious microbiology has an exclusively important role in the fight with the infectious diseases in the animals and humans. Its achievements connected with the study of the aethiological role of the microorganisms in the infectious pathology and in order to create an efficacy means for a specific prophylaxis and antibacterial chemotherapy are particularly significant. Other important tasks of infectious microbiology are in direction to development of modern methods (immunological, genetically engineered, with use of recombinant DNA etc .) for quick and sure diagnostics.

For the great volatility of the microorganisms and the quick development of resistance to the antibacterial means, the diseases caused by obligate and provisionally pathogen microorganisms continue to be an essential problem in the livestock breeding in spite of achievements of the contemporary immunoprophylaxis and antimicrobial chemotherapy. Range of particularly dangerous zooanthroponoses is still spread.

An important tasks stay in front of microbiology at present, connected with uncovering of a new means for prophylaxis and therapy of the infectious diseases, as well as of a new aethiological agents of infections. The achievement of microbiological science enrich not only the zoohygiene and infectious diseases, but they are important for the successes of the contemporary molecular biology and genetic too (the bacteria are the most appropriate subject for genetic studies). The creation of the recombinant DNA technology, which revealed new unsuspected perspectives in the biology and medicine, was an achievement of the bacterial genetic. The successes of microbiology in theoretical aspect tended to the development of molecular biology, in particular of the gene engineering – the base of the contemporary microbe biotechnology and in practical aspect – to the advancement in the field of diagnostic, prophylaxis and therapy of infectious diseases. Microbiology uses achievement of other disciplines too, such like the physics, inorganic and organic chemistry, biochemistry, pathological morphology, pathological physiology. In its turn it enriches the general and particular epizootology, zoohygiene, pharmacology and clinical disciplines.

Microbiology is an important discipline with significance for the training of the students in veterinary medicine. The syllabus includes selected themes from the general and particular veterinary microbiology, which teaching gives to the students a theoretical knowledge and practical skills. They are necessary for their further teaching, as well as for their future activity as veterinary doctors. In the educational course in veterinary microbiology is given schooling in morphology and physiology of the pathogenic for the domestic animals and humans bacteria. In view of the fact that microbiology is in direct connection with infectious diseases, basic knowledge for the most important from the pathogenesis, clinical and pathological changes, diagnostic methods, prophylactic and therapeutic means also is given.

<div class="elementor-element elementor-element-c8f9787 elementor-widget the interaction between the parasites and their hosts (pathogenesis, immunity), and also to arm them with scientific training and skills to reveal important points of epizootology and diagnostics of parasitic diseases, to treat verminous animals, to organize the prevention and fight against parasytoses in different technologies of animal breeding, to protect the environment from invasions and Less important are in the pathology of domestic animals in the subtropical courtiers and the ones having moderate climate. Abiotic factors of external environment play a crucial role in the epizootology of tropical invasions. This role is mainly expressed in the intensification to a different extent of the activity of the main driving forces of the epizootic process. Wild free-living animals, which are closely related to the ecological features of these regions of our planet, play a special role in the tropical zones. These animals are permanent sources of a variety of parasitic, bacterial and viral diseases, which they transmit to the domestic animals in their area of distribution. These diseases become a cause of big economic losses. They transmit either directly through bites or contacts, either through bearers, which most frequently are the arthropods. The tropical and subtropical countries abound in species of these latter. They transmit the invasions and the infections either mechanically, either biologically. The role of the blood-sucking insects and pasture ticks is especially important.

Students in Veterinary Medicine, especially those working in tropical and subtropical countries, must know these diseases very well in order to be able to proper diagnose and control such, and also to carry out the necessary prevention. Students must receive a very good training in regard with these diseases, which are widespread in the tropical countries, but may also distribute in the countries with moderate climate. A predisposing condition for their distribution is the permanently increasing migration of animals with economic purpose at the end of the twentieth century. This trend will intensify in the next century too. This is another reason for the Veterinary Surgeon to be well acquainted with the tropical diseases in animals.

Teaching hours: 15 hours of lectures

Lecturers:

Assoc. Except for pets, dogs are bred with economic purpose – as guards of animals, guards of dwellings, guards of private property, service dogs, etc. There are a lot of shepherd and hunting dogs in our country. Despite the efforts of the municipalities, there are a lot of wandering dogs in the big cities yet. Therefore, the Veterinarians must have a good knowledge in the pathology of canids and felids in order to be able to meet the needs of competent aid to owners of animals for company. This is also required due to the fact, that some of the parasitic diseases in dogs are common to them and the rest of the animals and the humans. This requires the students in Veterinary Medicine to have good training in invasion diseases in animals for company.Teaching hours: 15 hours of lectures and 15 hours of practicals SYLLABUS Lecturers: Assoc. Prof. Kostadin Pavlov Kanchev, PhD Diseases in Equine Species – Parasitic Diseases Parasitology (general part, Parasites of Farm Animals, Parasites of Exotic Animals, and Clinical Parasitology) Veterinary Parasitology is especially live now, when all reserves are being used in the private stock-farming and a big part of the animals are bred under pasture conditions, and simultaneously no prevention measures have been carried out for years. Veterinarians needs knowledge in Parasitology in order to be able to implement measures for protecting humans from dangerous parasitic diseases, which transmit directly to humans or through animal products. Parasitology is related to a lot of sciences of general biology and to almost all of the veterinary medicine ones, and also to the organization and economy of agriculture and first of all of stock-farming. Horses belong to the groups of animals where parasites are of great importance in their pathology due to the manner of their breeding. These animals are ecologically and biologically connected to the pasture. Thereof, they are frequently invaded by helminthoses and entomoses, which causers are related to the pastures. Teaching hours: 9 hours of lectures and 9 hours of practicals SYLLABUS Lecturers: Assoc. Prof. Kostadin Pavlov Kanchev, PhD Diseases in Farm Animals – Parasitic Diseases Parasitology (general part, Parasites of Farm Animals, Parasites of Exotic Animals, and Clinical Parasitology) Parasitic diseases of Farm animals is a veterinary science, which aims to provide students with theoretical knowledge about parasitism and parasites on animals, which are beneficial to humans, about their systematics, morphology, biology, physiology, biochemistry and ecology, about the interaction between the parasites and their hosts (pathogenesis, immunity), and also to arm them with scientific training and skills to reveal important points of epizootology and diagnostics of parasitic diseases, to treat verminous animals, to organize the prevention and fight against parasytoses in different technologies of animal breeding, to protect the environment from invasions and pollution. Veterinary Parasitology is especially live now, when all reserves are being used in the private stock-farming and a big part of the animals are bred under pasture conditions, and simultaneously no prevention measures have been carried out for years. Therefore, the theoretical and practical training in Parasitology requires the integration of knowledge and research methods in zoology, genetics, cytology, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, immunology, pathological physiology, pathology, pharmacology, feeding and zoohygiene, epizootology, non-infectious diseases, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, organization and economy of stock-farming, veterinary and sanitary expertise. Parasitology itself contributes to the more complete training in the subjects mentioned. Teaching hours: 56 hours of lectures and 51 hours of practicals SYLLABUS Lecturers: Assoc. Prof. Kostadin Pavlov Kanchev, PhD Epidemiology and Preventive Veterinary Medicine Epidemiology and preventive veterinary medicine The course „Epidemiology and Preventive Veterinary Medicine“, aims to give the students of Veterinary Medicine the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge on mass occurring diseases in animals (epidemics).
